Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek Overview

Shey Phoksundo Lake sits deep in the remote Dolpo Region of Nepal's Dolpa District, inside Karnali Province. This is not an easy place to reach. It formed 30,000 years ago, when a massive landslide dammed the valley, and today it sits at 3,611 meters (11,849 feet), covering roughly 4.94 square kilometers - one of Nepal's largest, deepest alpine lakes, known for that turquoise color caused by high mineral content and almost no aquatic life.

Phoksundo Lake sits entirely inside Shey Phoksundo National Park established back in 1984 as Nepal's largest national park and its only Himalayan protected area. Its outflow feeds the Phoksundo River which eventually tumbles over the 167-meter waterfall - Phoksundo Waterfall the tallest in the country. Given how ecologically important it is, the lake earned Ramsar site status in September 2007.

Right on the shoreline sits Ringmo village - a small Phoksundo Village settlement home to a Bon Gompa (temple) also called Ringmo reflecting older Bon spiritual tradition still practiced alongside Tibetan Buddhism. The Dolpo people here still consider the lake sacred, and old legends still circulate about protective deities guarding its waters.

Most trekkers reach the trailhead by flying from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then on to Juphal, the small airstrip serving this stretch of Dolpa. From there routes split between the Lower Dolpo Trekking Region and the wilder Upper Dolpo both offering genuinely quiet Himalayan Trekking well away from Nepal's busier circuits.

It's not all lakes and mountains, either. Villages here still run on traditional Tibetan rhythms - prayer flags, herding and centuries-old routines that haven't shifted much with time.

Accommodation sticks to a simple Teahouse Trekking setup in the lower villages, with options thinning out fast the deeper you go. For anyone chasing untouched Nepal Himalaya scenery, Shey Phoksundo is still one of the country's better-kept secrets.

Shey Phoksundo Lake Highlights

Shey Phoksundo Lake - stands next to Nepal's deepest lake. It is a bright blue alpine lake. An ancient landslide formed it 30,000 years ago.

Phoksundo Waterfall - See Nepal's highest waterfall. It drops 167 meters down from the lake into the gorge below.

Shey Phoksundo National Park - Walk through Nepal's largest national park. It is home to snow leopards and other rare wild animals.

900-Year-Old Bon Monastery - Visit Tshowa Gompa, an old Bon monastery. It sits on a high hill above the lake near Ringmo village.

Tibetan Culture in Ringmo - Explore Ringmo village. Here, local people follow ancient Bon traditions and Tibetan Buddhism.

Lower Dolpo - Walk through the green forests and deep gorges of Lower Dolpo. It is a quiet path into a very remote region.

Traditional Himalayan Settlement - Experience simple village life. People here still live by farming, raising animals, and praying, just like their ancestors did.

Traditional Monasteries - Discover old monasteries and shrines spread across the region. Each site has a long history and deep religious meaning.

Himalayan Landscapes - Enjoy views of steep cliffs, glaciers, and clear blue water surrounded by high mountain peaks.
