Mardi Himal Overview
Mardi Himal Trek is an awesome Short Trek In Nepal. If you prefer to take the road less travelled and spend more time in the peaceful centre of the infamous Annapurna area then it is an ideal option for you.
Mardi himal trek starts from the lakeside city of Pokhara. Before you start walking on the Nepal Mardi Himal route, you just need to get your required ACAP Permit and TIMS Card. You will pass through quiet traditional villages like Dhampus and Pothana as you enter the protected Annapurna Conservation Area. Right at the start, you will climb steep hand-carved stone steps, which will definitely make your legs feel the burn that will quickly remind you that you are walking among the highest mountains in the world. Climbing up the endless flight of uneven stone steps from Kande, wondering if your knees would hold up. The secret is to ignore the summit, watch your footing, and match your breathing to your steps right away. The tiredness fades fast when you meet friendly local herders and villagers who welcome you with warm smiles.
The first few days of your Mardi Himal Trail feel like walking through a fairytale. You will hike under a thick forest shade made of Rhododendron, Pine, Firs, and Deodars trees. The forest floor is full of vibrant Himalayan fauna. Make sure to keep an eye out for colorful pheasants, playful langurs, and nimble mountain goats. Walking through the moss-covered forests, you will feel eerie and beautiful all at once. If you stop moving for just a minute and listen past the cicadas, you can hear the deep, crashing sound of the Seti River roaring all the way from the canyon floor. The trail mixes challenging uphill climbs with flat, relaxing paths where you can easily catch your breath.
As you hike higher, the thick forests change into open, rugged ridges. The air becomes cold and crisp by the time you reach Badal Danda and High Camp. Here, you will stay in a cozy Trekking Lodge or a traditional mountain Teahouse. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions firsthand while sharing a hot meal with fellow travelers. By 4:00 PM at High Camp, the mist completely covers the ridge, and the temperature plummets. Everyone naturally packs into the central dining hall around the warm iron stove. It’s the best place to swap trail tips and keep your water bottles from freezing overnight.
The most exciting part of the Himalayan Trekking happens during the early morning push for Mardi Himal Hiking. You will wake up at 4:00 AM to hike through the chilly night past the High Camp Viewpoint. The cold will bite at your face, but as you reach the high Mardi Himal View point, the sky lights up with a brilliant Himalayan Sunrise in shades of pink, purple, and gold, which will make you forget all about the exhaustion.
Right in front of you, a massive Mountain Panorama of the Annapurna massif appears. You will see a giant wall of glowing peaks such as Mt. Machhapuchhre (also known as Fishtail Mountain), Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Annapurna III and Annapurna IV.
Apart from these peaks you can also spot Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Lamjung Himal, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tent Peak, Tukuche Peak, and Himchuli Peak.
From this viewpoint, you can walk further to reach Mardi Himal Base Camp (often just called Mardi Base Camp). Standing at 4,500 meters directly below the giant rock and ice wall of Mardi Himal, you get a thrilling trekking peak experience. On your way back down, you can extend your path to the Australian base camp or walk down through the quiet trails of Siding Village. With its manageable Trek Duration and stunning wild beauty, this is truly a top choice for Nepal Trekking.
Mardi Himal Base Camp Highlights
- Stunning Close-Up of Mt. Machhapuchhre: The Mardi Himal Trek offers a remarkably intimate and entirely clear view of the sacred Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), which stands at 6,993 meters. The twin pyramid form of the peak, sharp and with two summits, seems almost within reach, marking it as a notable feature.
- Verdant Rhododendron Forest Paths: The initial sections of the hike meander through a thick, captivating woodland of moss-covered oaks and towering rhododendron trees. In spring, these flowers burst into a vibrant display of pink and red blooms, forming a fragrant, dreamlike natural passage for hikers.
- Badal Danda (Cloud Hill) Encounter: Perched on an elevated ridge, Badal Danda is renowned for its stunning sea-of-clouds phenomenon. Dense, undulating clouds often rest low in the valleys, with the enormous, snow-capped Himalayan summits towering like islands in a wide, white, and utterly dreamlike sea.
- Thrilling Alpine Ridge Treks: Departing from Low Camp, the thick woods vanish entirely as the path ascends to elevated, verdant ridges. Hiking these slim, open trails offers breathtaking 360-degree vistas of vast, undulating green valleys to one side and majestic snow-capped mountains on the opposite side.
- Mardi Himal Base Camp and Viewpoint: Arriving at the ultimate point at 4,500 meters grants you a stunning golden sunrise above the grand Annapurna range. You remain in tranquil isolation beneath the towering cliffs of Mardi Himal and Annapurna South, experiencing a deep feeling of accomplishment.

The third day of this itinerary takes you from the scenic ridge of Australian Camp 2,060m to the quiet clearing of Forest Camp in the heart of the Mardi Himal trek 2,520m. Leaving Australian Camp behind, you will step onto a peaceful, winding trail that enters a pristine forest. Having walked this stretch, you will find that the cool canopy of ancient oaks and maples offers a welcoming, shaded relief against the midday sun, with the trail underfoot shifting from rich forest dirt to beautifully moss-covered stone steps. The day starts with a steady ascent through the dense forest. You will navigate winding trails under a heavy canopy, surrounded by lush vegetation and rich jungle flora. As you steadily climb higher and approach the 3000-meter mark, the thick forest begins to pull back. The dense canopy gives way to shorter shrubs and clearing skies. This leg of the journey marks a beautiful transition in the regional landscape, crossing the threshold into the high alpine zone as you reach Forest Camp.
Maximum Altitude: Low Camp (3,050m /10,007ft)
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek Duration: 4-5 hours
The trail climbing out of low camp quickly leaves the last of the rhododendron and oak forest behind you to reach into a rugged, high-altitude alpine landscape. As you gain altitude, the iconic twin peaks of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the massive south face of Annapurna South can offer some of the most dramatic photo opportunities of the entire trek. A significant portion of today's trek follows a spectacular, grassy ridge line. Weather permitting, you will literally walk above the clouds with sweeping, panoramic views on both sides of the trail. When trekking through Badal Danda, we highly recommend keeping your camera handy; the sensation of walking along a narrow, grassy ridge line while looking down at a blanket of clouds on both sides is an unforgettable highlight of the journey. Passing the viewpoint, a bustling cluster of tea houses of High Camp appears as you climb.
Maximum Altitude: High Camp (3,580m /11,745ft)
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek Duration: 4-5 hours
Day 6 will be the most challenging and the highlight of this trip. Early in the morning, push from High camp (typically before sunrise) to catch the best weather windows and witness a spectacular alpine sunrise. With a headlamp strapped to your head, you will climb through a dramatic, exposed stone ridge line. The terrain becomes increasingly rugged, steep, and rocky, requiring careful footing as you ascend high above the clouds to reach the trek's highest destination at Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 meters).
As daylight breaks, you are rewarded with jaw-dropping, up-close views of the entire Annapurna Sanctuary. The south face of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the towering, sacred peak of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) dominate the skyline right beside you. After capturing the views, you will start backtracking the same route to High Camp.
Maximum Altitude: Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m /14,764ft) & High Camp (3,580m /11,745ft)
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek Duration: 6-7 hours
The trail significantly drops from 3580m to 1700m today. The day marks the beginning of the return journey as you leave the high camp, the high-altitude alpine ridge of High Camp ( and make a sharp descent to the traditional settlement of Siding Village. You will quickly pass back through the alpine shrubbery and re-enter the lush rhododendron and oak forest canopy. The air will become noticeably thicker, warmer, and easier to breathe with every passing hour. Continuing the walk, the path splits in two: the main trail and a steep drop, which you will be taking to get to the Village. The trail drops sharply out of High Camp. We have consistently noted that this massive descent can be incredibly punishing on the joints, so pacing yourself and locking your trekking poles is essential to reduce the impact and stress on your knees.
Siding is a beautiful, traditional Gurung and Brahmin farming village that has remained largely untouched by heavy commercial tourism.
